Join us to honor the timeless legacies of iconic master saxophonists, John Coltrane & Jimmy Heath. Two distinct strands in the threads of modern music – John Coltrane, a spiritual sonic explorer redefining the genre and horn; and Jimmy Heath, dubbed “Little Bird” a composer and bebop master and mentor – we elevate the giants who lend shoulders to our forward creative future. Heath, also an arranger/composer, NEA Jazz Master, was born in Philadelphia of the Heath family (with Tootie & Percy). He and his brother joined Howard McGhee in 1947 then Dizzy Gillespie, before he switched to tenor and found his sound with Clifford Brown & J.J. Johnson. He wrote for Chet Baker, Art Blakey; worked with Miles Davis, Benny Golson, Kenny Dorham (of Austin), Gil Evans, Art Farmer, and others. He was a presence in the community, and mentored many, including Sam. He was all about the music. “I’m going to do this until I leave, this is all I love.” – Jimmy Heath Coltrane was a legend and force of the tenor saxophone, cementing a sound for generations. Coming from North Carolina, and spending time in Philadelphia and New York, his influence on jazz and saxophonists is unfathomable. He explored his powerful voice across spiritual, academic, and standard repertoire with iconic recordings such as A Love Supreme, Giant Steps, and My Favorite Things; in addition to appearing as a legendary sideman, e.g. Miles Davis Quintet. His contributions to music materially shifted the wider consciousness and evolution of modern practice. “I humbly asked to be given the means and privilege to make others happy through music,” – Coltrane in a letter to his listeners, 1964 With Sam Dillon (New York; of the Jimmy Heath Big Band, Mingus Big Band, Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Slide Hampton Octet).
