This class will run between 2 to 4 PM. About Sam Dillon: Native New Yorker, saxophonist, recording artist, composer and educator Sam Dillon is a master improviser, powerful sound technician of the instrument, and steward of the jazz tradition bridging the gap for modern generations. Sam’s perspective comes from experiential knowledge, straight off the award-winning bandstand and out of the studio, made practical and accessible for aspiring jazz artists. Join us with your questions on topics related to saxophone, practice, musicianship, ensemble performance, studio recording, and life as a working saxophonist. Sam Dillon has been on over 50 studio recordings, including his own on La Reserve / Pinch Records (“Trade-Off” with Andrew Gould) and Cellar Live (“My Ideal”. He performs with legendary ensembles like Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Mingus Big Band, Slide Hampton Octet, 8-Bit Big Band, and many others. Sam’s most recent sideman recordings include The Birdland Big Band (2025) The Mingus Big Band (2024 Grammy-nominated) Mark Sherman’s “With Freedom” on Miles High Records (2023) and Chris Hajian’s “A Portrait in Melancholy” (2023). Sam’s previous leader albums include “Two Part Solution” with Frank Basile on Cellar Live in (2020); “Force Field” on PosiTone (2019) and “Out In The Open” on Cellar Live (2018). Sam is a graduate of SUNY Purchase at The Juilliard School, was Director of the Jazz Program at USDAN Summer Camp for the Arts, and semi-finalist at the prestigious Monk Competition.
