Originally a trumpet player, Ryan later switched to electric and double bass. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Texas at Austin, as well as bachelor’s and master’s degrees in jazz studies from the University of North Texas. He spent two years as a member of the acclaimed One O'Clock Lab Band, with whom he recorded two albums, "Lab 2008", and the Grammy-nominated "Lab 2009." From 2012 to 2020, Ryan served as professor of bass and ensembles at the San Francisco University in Quito, Ecuador. He has performed across the United States, as well as in South Korea, Thailand, Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands, and Europe, including the Montreux, Umbria, and North Sea Jazz Festivals. Rachel has shared the stage with many incredible musicians such as Graham Reynolds, Nikki Glaspie, Andre Hayward, Diego Rivera, and Peggy Stern among others. Her music has afforded her travel opportunities nationally and internationally; She has performed at TMEA, OMEA, the Tanglewood Music Center, and has toured to Hong Kong as a featured performer in the Chinese New Year Parade. In Austin, she has regularly performed as a leader and a side musician in the cities top music venues including but not limited to: Monks Jazz Club, The Elephant Room, Parker Jazz Club, Antones, The 04 Center, Emo's The Continental Club, The Electric Church, Mohawk, Half Step, The Long Center, and SXSW showcases. Outside of performing, Rachel is a dedicated music educator with over a decade of experience, mentoring many students to success in auditions and competitions while holding leadership roles and director roles in various organizations such as UT Austin, DCI, Soundsport, and New School of Music Austin. They recently recorded their debut album in Austin at Adrian Quesada’s Electric Deluxe Recorders. They are inspired by jazz-hop influencers such as Robert Glasper and Chris Dave, as well as the modern spiritualists Kamasi Washington and Shabaka Hutchings. The group was formed in 2020, over the pandemic, when Marshall contacted drummer Michael Longoria to add some live drums to the EP “The Black Power Tape,” which was described in a feature for Okayplayer as “exploring the myriad of emotions that come with being Black in America, all against a backdrop of soothing, soulful music.” The full quartet made their recording debut on Marshall’s follow up EP, “The Prequel.” The debut full length, “earth sounds”, came in April of 2023. The band has toured Europe and America, including a sold-out two performance night at the legendary Ronnie Scott’s club in London. Known for his work with jazz supergroup Snarky Puppy, Yayennings lives in Los Angeles, CA and teaches at Occidental College as an adjunct trumpet professor and ensemble leader. Yayennings has had a fruitful career backing up some of the world’s finest artists such as Aretha Franklin, Michael McDonald, David Crosby, David Bowie, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, The Four Tops, and many more. Upon his move from NYC to Los Angeles in February of 2017, Jennings began composing for his own band, The Yayennings Quartet. Margaret Slovak - Guitar Chris Maresh - Bass Masumi Jones - Drums Margaret Slovak is a guitarist, composer and painter. Born and raised in Denver, Colorado, she began playing the guitar at age 11 and composing at age 14. Margaret studied jazz and classical music and visual art, receiving her BFA in Music from the Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Washington. Her teachers included guitarists John Abercrombie, Dale Bruning and Ralph Towner; she also had the opportunity to study composition with trumpeter Kenny Wheeler at the Banff Centre Summer Jazz Workshop in Alberta, Canada. Margaret has performed throughout the US, as well as in Canada, Germany and the Czech Republic. She moved to Austin in 2012 from New York, where she lived from 1988-1993 and again from 2008-2012. While in NYC, Margaret had the opportunity to perform and record with pianists Fred Hersch and Joel Weiskopf, bassists Michael Formanek and Harvie S and drummer Michael Sarin. While living in Portland, Oregon, she toured the Pacific NW and Canada with her quartet, which included legendary drummer Bob Moses. In addition to her public performances, Margaret plays for patients in chemotherapy infusion centers, hospitals and hospice; she also performed for wounded combat veterans at the Bronx VA Hospital in NYC from 2009-2012. Margaret is also a painter, creating visual images which reflect her musical compositions; her artwork appears on her CD packages. Margaret has released 4 CDs featuring her original music. Her most recent CD, Ballad for Brad, highlights her original music for a jazz trio featuring Margaret on guitar, Harvie S on bass and Michael Sarin on drums. Margaret’s albums have received national and international airplay, and her music has been used in several documentary films. He has performed, recorded, and toured with many world-class artists including Ellis Marsalis, Maynard Ferguson, Christopher Cross, Charlie Hunter, Asleep at the Wheel, Alejandro Escovedo, Sheryl Crow, Grupo Fantasma, Spoon, The Four Tops, and The Temptations, among many others. Mentored by the legendary saxophonists Harvey Pittel and Dick Oatts, Elias studied saxophone at the University of Texas and then at the Manhattan School of Music. His interest in writing music culminated in a Master’s Degree in Composition at Texas State University in San Marcos. Elias has performed around the United States and Europe at clubs like Snug Harbor in New Orleans, Jazz Alley in Seattle, The Elephant Room in Austin, and The Blue Note in New York. He has also served as a guest artist/lecturer at universities around the nation. Elias has 7 recordings as a leader all of which have been played on radio stations across the world. Wes Case - Guitar Collin Shook - Piano James Suter - Double Bass Daniel Dufour - Drums About Wes Case: Texas native and professional guitarist, composer and educator for 13 years, Wes Case has a highly playful and rhythmically driven voice seldom heard on the guitar. Upon graduating from UNT’s jazz program in 2015, he began performed and traveling throughout Latin America, studying Uruguay’s folk music Candombe in Montevideo, Quechua (an Andean language) while in Peru, as well the rich world of rhythm with Filó Machado(of Djavan) in Brazil. He recorded and released his debut album – “E Fado” - during a trip back home in 2018. Now re-established in Texas, he has become among the most in-demand guitarists of his generation. The band, Wes Case and Co. is highly dynamic experience exploring the most intimate and energetic sides of jazz, drawing influence from Keith Jarrett, John Coltrane, classical, modern jazz and folk-afro influences from the south american diaspora. The repertoire includes a mix of jazz standards, originals, contemporary covers, and arrangements of classic American pop tunes in relevant modern improvisational styles (a technique jazz musicians used in the swing and bebop heyday). An active educator, bandleader and sideman for various DFW projects, Wes can be found performing in traditional jazz settings, exploring his playful arrangements of classic pop tunes, and original modern jazz projects. He plays regularly with the Skinny Cooks, and has performed or shared the stage with Bernard Wright, RC Williams and Cleon Edwards(of Erykah Badu), Fred Hamilton, Shelley Carrol(Duke Ellington Orchestra), Bobby Sparks(RH Factor, Snarky Puppy), and Melvin Wells(of Cameo). About Collin Shook: Collin Shook, native to Dallas, Texas, is a jazz pianist, composer, and founder of Monks Jazz. During high school, he studied instruments from all around the bandstand, moved to Austin in 2007, performed and recorded in Tucson from 2009 to 2013, and finally returned to Austin in 2014. In September 2016, Collin collaborated with the art co-op Topology in East Austin to create Monks Jazz Club, a pop-up listening room concept. Having hosted nearly 100 pop-up concerts in over a dozen venues from 2016-2020, Monks transitioned to a live-streaming format in response to the pandemic, and in 2021 landed a permanent brick and mortar space in the heart of East Austin, where Collin has produced over 600 Monks live-taping concerts. Torri Baker - Vocals Jason Quiroga - Guitar Marco Antonio Santos - Guitar Billy Satterwhite - Bass Daniel Sanchez - Drums Torri Baker: Torri Baker is a vocalist with an upbringing that cultivated a deep love for crafting harmonies and delivering soul-stirring performances. She has been shaped by rigorous vocal training and a diverse range of influences in jazz, soul, gospel, country, rock, and Broadway. She draws inspiration from many including Ella Fitzgerald, Barbra Streisand, Whitney Houston, and her mother, a revered gospel performer: Gerri Brown. Torri is also a proud alumna of Ohio State University. Marco Antonio Santos: Originally from Minas Gerais, Brazil, and currently based here in Austin, TX. Throughout more than fifteen years as a professional musician, Santos has performed extensively in Brazil and the United States, navigating freely between jazz, funk, pop, and brazilian music. His multiple influences range from Radiohead and Pat Metheny to Maria Schneider and Brazilian legend Milton Nascimento. Marco holds a doctorate in jazz composition and a master of music degree in jazz performance from the University of Texas at Austin. Jason Quiroga-McNay: Having grown up in a musical family, Jason was exposed to good music early on and began classical guitar studies at age 9. Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmy Page and Eddie Van Halen attracted him to other genres in addition to his classical interests in his teens. After serving in the US Army, Jason returned to his musical endeavors and completed a bachelors degree in music at the University of Texas at San Antonio, as well as a bachelors degree in classical guitar and a masters degree in jazz guitar performance from the University of Texas at Austin. Billy Satterwhite: Billy has been performing on the bass guitar and double Bass at a professional level in professional settings since the age of 17. Playing in musical styles from jazz, rock, blues, country, symphonic, brazilian, salsa, and just about everything in between. Over the years he has performed all over the United States, and festivals in Canada, Mexico, Switzerland, France, South Korea, and Taiwan. Billy comfortably plays roles as a music festival coordinator, musical director, a musical sideman as well as a leader of his own groups. Billy holds a bachelors degree in jazz studies from Texas State University and a masters in music from the University of Michigan. Daniel Sanchez: Raised in Atlanta, GA and Lubbock, TX, Danny moved to Austin in 2009 after 10 years of living and performing in New York City. Musical versatility continues to provide him with opportunities to perform steadily here in Austin. He works with multiple musical production companies where he is sought after for corporate and private performances, original artists’ engagements, and guest artists. He serves in two music ministries in the Austin area and works closely with Genesis Drum & Bugle Corps based here in Austin. He holds a degree in music education from Texas Tech University. Jon Deas - Piano & Keyboard Matt Muehling - Guitar Ryan Hagler - Bass Mike Gonzales - Percussion Charles Reid - Drums A native of Buffalo, New York, Jonathan E. Deas began his musical career as the drummer in his father’s traveling gospel group, but after attending the Buffalo Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts, he discovered his love for the piano. Quickly becoming an in-demand player on the Austin music scene upon his arrival in 2005, Deas has performed with legendary artists George Clinton, Jon B, and Michelle Williams, and also founded a record label, KeyzStreet, producing music for Jackie Venson, Alesia Lana, Jake Lloyd, and others. Since 2018, Deas has been touring with Grammy Award-winning artist Gary Clark Jr. Please Note: This is a live-taping, so we'll be enforcing a whisper-policy! Join us for a live taping and listening-room concert for Adi Meyerson & Dark Matter! Adi Meyerson - Bass Christopher McBride - Alto Saxophone Daniel Dufour - Drums As a bass player and band leader, Adi Meyerson finds herself constantly gravitating towards linear melodies, while always knowing where we are within the sonic and harmonic language. She has released two critically acclaimed albums, “Where We Stand” (2018) and “I Want to Sing My Heart Out in Praise of Life” (2020). Meyerson has played international acclaimed festivals such as BRIC Jazz Fest, Guatemala Jazz Festival, Center City Philidelphia Jazz Fest, and has toured extensively throughout the United States and Central America. In 2020, she was a recipient of the NYFA Women’s Grant. “Dark Matter” is an exploration of the push and pull between free and improvised music to more structured music, with a focus on what’s not written on the page and what ends up being created from the lack of information given; a project that centers on tension and release. The ensemble first came together in 2022, and was a recipient of the Greenwich Music House ‘Uncharted’ Residency/Grant. Since then, Ali Meyerson and Dark Matter have played multiple shows throughout the east and west coast. The recipient of the Chamber Music America 2024 Plus Grant, the group recently recorded their first album, set to be released in 2025.
